A Westmoreland man has been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and unauthorised possession of ammunition following seizure of a loaded firearm along the Anchovy main road in St James on Saturday.

He is Chavoy McKenzie, a 29-year-old technical engineer, of Amity in Westmoreland.

The Montego Bay police say about 10:00 p.m., during a coordinated roadblock, McKenzie was driving a red Honda Civic motor car and was signalled to stop.

The police say he complied, a search of the vehicle was conducted and five nine-millimetre cartridges were found in the driver's door pocket.

They say a further check led to the discovery of a nine-millimetre pistol affixed with a magazine containing five rounds in a black bag on the rear passenger seat.

McKenzie was taken into custody, where he was formally charged on Monday.

A court date is being arranged for him.
