‘Fields of Opportunity’ scholarship launched to support children of Jamaican farmworkers
In a strategic move to strengthen support for Jamaica’s overseas workers, JN Money Services, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and the Jamaica Liaison Service (JLS), has launched the Fields of Opportunity Scholarship, a new programme aimed at supporting the children of Jamaican farmworkers employed in Canada under the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme (SAWP).
The scholarship, which was officially launched at the JN Financial Centre, will award six education grants valued at $500,000 across the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. The awards will be disbursed starting September 2025.
Speaking at the launch, Minister of Labour and Social Security Pearnel Charles Jr said the scholarship represents a tangible investment in the lives of farmworkers and their families.
“This is a declaration that the children of farmworkers matter,” he said. “Their dreams, aspirations, and potential are worthy of investment and celebration,” he added.
He also commended the long-standing partnership between JN Money and the ministry, describing it as a relationship that continues to yield meaningful results for Jamaican workers and their families.
General manager of JN Money Services, Horace Hines, shared that the scholarship is part of the company’s broader commitment to go beyond financial transactions and invest in people and communities.
“We feel that what we have today is a game-changer,” said Hines. “It will help to enrich the lives not just of our current customers, but the next generation. And we hope that we can plant a seed that will help to grow generations to come.”
Hines also revealed that JN Money intends to expand the scholarship initiative to benefit farmworkers based in the United States, as part of its recognition of the importance of the Jamaican diaspora across North America.
To qualify, applicants must be JN Money customers for at least one year and must have completed a minimum of eight transactions between March and October 2025, using JN Money Online, the Mobile Unit, or the Simcoe Branch. The scholarship programme is open to parents or legal guardians of students enrolled at the primary, secondary, or tertiary levels of the Jamaican school system. Eligible students must have maintained a minimum ‘B’ average. Entry forms are available at all JN Money branches, through the Mobile Unit, or online at the JN Money website.
