Transport Minister concerned about recent fatal road crashes
Minister of Transport Daryl Vaz is expressing deep sorrow and grave concern over the recent spate of fatal road crashes that have claimed the lives of several individuals in recent weeks.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. These tragic losses are not mere statistics — they are sons, daughters, parents, and valued members of our communities,” Vaz said in a statement on Thursday.
“I am particularly disturbed by the circumstances surrounding many of these incidents, which often involve excessive speeding, distracted driving, the non-use of seat belts and safety gear, and, in some cases, impaired driving. These are preventable causes that demand a complete cultural shift in how we treat our roads and each other,” he continued.
Vaz emphasised that this is not simply a law enforcement issue, but one that requires a fundamental change in attitudes toward road safety.
“Every road user must take responsibility for their actions and recognise that reckless choices have fatal consequences,” he said.
In response, the Ministry will strengthen coordination with the Jamaica Constabulary Force, the Island Traffic Authority, the National Road Safety Council, and other stakeholders to improve enforcement and public awareness.
This will include increased patrols, roadside checks, and targeted safety campaigns in high-risk areas.
The Transport Minister also urged Jamaicans to play their part in reversing the current trend.
“This is a critical moment. No law or regulation will be effective unless we, as a nation, recommit to valuing life and showing care and discipline on our roads. Road safety is not just a slogan — it is a shared duty.”
He is calling for the public to remain vigilant, obey all traffic laws, and report reckless behaviour.
“Only through a united effort can Jamaica reduce road deaths and create a safer, more responsible transport environment for all,” Vaz concluded.
