The police are probing an incident in which Member of Parliament (MP) for Kingston Central Donovan Williams and his campaign team were reportedly shot at on Tuesday evening.

Reports reaching The Gleaner are that unidentified men opened fire in the direction of Williams and his security detail responded by returning fire.

Williams has since released audio detailing the incident while calling for calm.

“While I was with my campaign team at the intersection of South Camp Road and Tower Street, a motor car approached. Several men exited the vehicle and opened fire at the team. We took evasive action and the men returned to the car and sped off,” Williams said.

No one was reportedly injured.

A vehicle in the MP's convoy was struck by a bullet and a billboard was also pierced.

The Gleaner was told that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) MP and his team, including his campaign manager, were in the constituency mounting political paraphernalia.

The General Elections are widely expected in September.

“I want to appeal to my supporters to remain calm. We will not be intimidated, but I appeal for calm,” Williams said.

The Kingston East police are probing the incident.
