Tufton awaiting possible lawsuit from KD Knight, prepared to file counterclaim
Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton says his attorneys are awaiting the serving of a possible lawsuit from former Cabinet minister and senator KD Knight.
“If that’s the route that they want to go then my lawyers will deal with it,” Tufton told The Gleaner on Thursday.
The conflict between the two men stems from the use of a recording of Knight by Tufton while addressing a mass rally of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) last Sunday.
Knight, a King's Counsel, accused the health minister of using what he described as a "manipulated recording" which falsely suggested he has no confidence that People's National Party President Mark Golding can lead Jamaica.
Knight, Junor & Samuels, the law firm representing him, has given Tufton until Friday morning to publicly apologise or face a lawsuit.
However, Tufton has claimed that the recording is authentic and has been circulated publicly for years.
Speaking during a JLP press conference on Thursday, Tufton said he has heard through the media “certain statements that have been made which would require me to prepare myself”.
“So, I am prepared. My attorneys are waiting, when I am served, if I am served, then they will take the necessary actions,” he told The Gleaner.
That action, he said, will include a response “and a counterclaim”.
Tufton, however, declined to comment further, explaining that “I don’t want to go into it beyond that because I don’t want to speculate”.
“Let me see what comes. I am prepared to respond, plus a counterclaim. I am not desirous of playing things out in court, but I am also not going to sit down and allow charges and counter charges,” he said.
“I am not gonna discuss it publicly or engage in any prolonged conversation because I want to focus on the campaign and what is at stake: and what is at stake is the future of the country," he added.
