PNP Rally | Phillips confident in Golding’s economic leadership, backs proposed $3.5M income tax threshold

Former People’s National Party (PNP) President and Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Dr Peter Phillips, has given his backing to party leader Mark Golding and the PNP’s proposal to increase the income tax threshold to $3.5 million.

Addressing scores of supporters at a PNP mass rally in Sam Sharpe Square, Montego Bay, on Sunday night, Phillips declared his full confidence in Golding’s ability to lead Jamaica’s economy forward.

“I am here tonight because the $3.5 million tax threshold that the PNP is going to put in place will help ordinary Jamaicans benefit more from the economy of this country, so that it doesn’t just benefit a few people,” Phillips said to thunderous applause.

The former finance minister, who oversaw Jamaica’s return to fiscal stability during the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme of 2012–2016, reminded the crowd of the sacrifices that were made under his stewardship and defended the PNP’s economic record.

“The economic stability that now exists in Jamaica was established by the People’s National Party,” Phillips argued.

He pointed to growth figures, low inflation, and a booming stock market under the PNP, crediting Golding for his role in implementing tough but necessary reforms.

“A lot of that is due to Mark Golding, who worked day and night, through the night, to make this happen,” Phillips said.

Declaring that the PNP is “united, together, and strong and marching forward,” Phillips urged supporters to back Golding and his team at the polls.

“I am here tonight because I know that Mark Golding will lead an administration of honesty, integrity… committed to good governance,” he declared.
