Man fatally shot after alleged confrontation with police in St Catherine

A 28-year-old man was fatally shot by police during an alleged confrontation in Kent Village, St Catherine, on Wednesday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Kevon Bennett, from the community.

Reports are that about 5:10 a.m., police operatives acting on intelligence went into the Kent Village community near Bog Walk, St Catherine.

Upon arrival, the team reportedly went to a premises and, while entering a dwelling house, Bennett, who was in a back room, allegedly challenged the police with a handgun.

Police say they took defensive action and returned fire. During the exchange, Bennett was shot and injured.

After the shooting subsided, Bennett was found suffering from gunshot wounds.

A Smith and Wesson pistol, fitted with a magazine containing nine rounds of ammunition, was reportedly seized.

Bennett was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Independent Commission of Investigations has been notified.
