Two people charged in connection with the seizure of an illegal firearm during a police operation in Portmore, St Catherine have been ordered by the court to receive urgent medical attention after their attorneys raised concerns about their health while seeking bail on humanitarian grounds.

The accused are 42-year-old Christine Lewis of Ontario, Canada, and 24-year-old Nakibo Foster, an unemployed resident of Quarry Hill, Spanish Town, St Catherine, who are jointly charged with possession of prohibited weapon and unauthorized possession of ammunition.

They appeared before Senior Parish Court Judge Desiree Alleyne on Friday, where their lawyers made a bail application asking for their release.

Attorney-at-law Bradley Medwynter told the court that Foster had previously been shot 11 times prior to the incident and is still recovering from those injuries.

Meanwhile, attorney-at-law Shelldon Campbell said Lewis is suffering from endometriosis and requires urgent medical attention.

The bail application was denied but the judge issued as order that they be given urgent medical attention.

The matter was transferred to the Gun Court in Kingston for a hearing on April 17.

Allegations are that about 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 6, police were on duty in Portmore, St Catherine when they intercepted a Toyota Probox motor car driven by Lewis, with two men on board.

It is alleged that a male passenger seated in the front of the vehicle jumped out and escaped in the area.

According to the police, a subsequent search of the vehicle reportedly led to the seizure of a high-powered weapon fitted with a magazine containing six rounds of 5.56 ammunition.

Lewis and Foster were arrested and later charged.
