The track and field world suffered a major scare, as Usain Bolt, had to recover from a stumble at the start of his race to progress to the final of men’s 100m set for 8:15 a.m.

Bolt won in a time of 9.96 the same as second-place Andre De Grasse of Canada.

"I’m not worried. I felt good at the start, but I don’t know what happened with that stumble at the start," Bolt later said.

While Bolt’s win was anything but smooth, his biggest rival Justin Gatlin of the USA was impressive winning heat two in 9.77.

Jamaica’s Nickel Ashmeade failed to make the final after finishing down the track behind Gatlin in sixth with a time of 10.06.

Asafa Powell also made it into the men’s showpiece event after finishing second in his heat behind perennial rival Tyson Gay.

Gay stopped the clock at 9.96 with Powell crossing the finish line in 9.97
