Manchester champions brace for Burger King 5k Run/Walk tomorrow

 

The Burger King 5K run and walk races returns to Mandeville after a one-year break tomorrow.

Currently, the parish of Manchester boasts the top exponents in both categories.

G.C. Foster runner Daniel Glaves, formerly of Holmwood Technical, has never been beaten in the races held in the parish. Professional Male Walker Duwell Allen, of the NCU team, has been dominant since last year, and easily took the recent Kingston College race.

His NCU teammates also placed second and third.

Female walker Natasha McKenzie has won the last seven road walk events and is the only female walker to post 31 minutes for a 5k walk event locally. She was also victorious at the Kingston College event.

Several Manchester-based schools like Holmwood Technical, Spaldings High, Bellefield, Mile Gully and May Day are expected to field the bulk of the junior contenders.

 

Manchester FA to suffer from lost of Captain's Bakery sponsorship

 

With the start of the new season just weeks away, the Manchester FA is contending that it and other parishes will face dire sponsorship gaps with the expected loss of the Captain's Bakery and Grill sponsorship.

Manchester FA, for example, has been the beneficiary of the Captain's Bakery and Grill sponsorship for the last 13 years. It has been their most secured sponsor's call in terms of prize money, referee fees, balls, as well as products to host functions.

The death of Captain Horace Burrell, the CEO of company, had the effect of curtailing payments for the past season as well as the end of the sponsorship.

For the first time in 13 years, awardees as well as invitees to the recent end of season ceremony at Golf View Hotel did not walk home with Captain Bakery and Grill baked products like bread, bullas and donuts.

As it faces the start of the 2017-18 season, the association is also on the hunt for sponsorship of its Under-13 and Under-15 leagues, as well as its Under-20 Women's league.

 

JHF Hockey 5s U-17 Development Tournament

 

The Jamaica Hockey Federation will be hosting its first Hockey 5s U17 Development Tournament at the Mona Hockey Field starting at 8:30 p.m tonight.

The objective of this tournament is to start the process of screening players for training for the Jamaica's Hockey 5's Youth Olympic team that will be participating in the pre-qualification tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico in March 2018. The Youth Olympics will then be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina in August 2018.

Hockey 5s were introduced in 2012 and focused primarily on a smaller game for Under-17 players and is the official field hockey game played at the Youth Olympics. The JHF's vision is participation in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Therefore, the federation is now changing its paradigm to seriously invest in the development of the cadre of international quality youth talent that resides in our schools and across the island.

The game is a five-on-five (5 vs 5), including a goalkeeper with barriers around the field so that the ball does not go out off bounds unless over the barriers.

 

All set for Guardian Life Open Junior Tennis Tournament

 

The Guardian Life Open Junior Tennis Tournament is the second of a two part series that continues to contribute to the development of junior players across the island.

The weekend tournament is scheduled to begin today at 9 a.m. The contestants will vie for trophy prizes in the categories Boys' 10, 12, 14, 16 & 18 and Girls' beginners, intermediary and advanced levels.

In addition to trophy prizes, the winners in each category will also receive points towards their national ranking. The semi-finals will be played tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the finals scheduled to get under way at 2 p.m. The closing and presentation ceremony will follow directly after the finals.
