High school athletes from eastern Jamaica, who were preparing for the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships, suffered a major blow late Monday night, with news of the cancellation of the the Eastern Athletics Championships, mere hours before its scheduled start.

The championships was expected to get underway inside the National Stadium on Tuesday, with the first event scheduled to take place at 8:30 a.m.

According to information reaching The Gleaner, the plug was pulled on the meet after the Government decided not to give the go-ahead for the meet. The decision was made during a meeting late Monday night.

Last year's championships was topped by St Mary High School.
