Carifta Trials | McDonald leaps to high jump victory, Blake, Dwyer fastest over 800m
St Jago’s Annishka McDonald won the JAAA Carifta Trials Girls Under-20 high jump with a leap of 1.78 metres at the National Stadium today.
McDonald won the event ahead of Wolmer’s Girls’ Malaika Cunningham (1.75m) and Torian Caven from Vere, who also leapt (1.75m).
Rohanna Sudlow from St Catherine captured the girls Under-17 long jump title when she cut the sand at 5.69m ahead of Shemonique Hazle from Hydel (5.35), and Excelsior’s Shelly-Ann Taylor who also measured a jump of 5.37m.
Jamaica College’s (JC) outstanding middle distance runner J’Voughnn Blake, who won the Under-20 1500m title on Friday, leads all qualifiers into tomorrow's 800m final after clocking one minute 55.23 seconds to win his heat.
Blake’s teammate Kemarrio Bygrave will enter the final with the second fastest time of 1:56.08. Next was Adrian Nethersole of STETHS (1:56.09), Corlando Chambers from St Jago (1:55.88), Omarion Davis of JC (1:56.13) and Tafar-Hi Hinds from St Jago (1:56.21).
Edwin Allen’s Rushana Dwyer will head into tomorrow’s girls’ Under-20 800m final as the fastest qualifier after winning her heat in two minutes 13. 72 seconds.
Samantha Pryce of Holmwood, who finished second behind Dwyer will enter the final with the second fastest time of 2:13.78.
Kishay Rowe of Alphansus Davis High School (2:14.06), Shone Walters from St Mary (2:14.34) and Jody-Ann Mitchell of Holmwood (2:14.53) are the other leading contenders for the winner’s podium.
