Pueblo El Pao, Santa Cruz, Trinidad and Tobago – Trinidad and Tobago’s Tysan Selvon and Britney Choon claimed a historic 2-0 win over Jamaica’s Jade Parchment and Andrea Ashman to clinch the gold medal in the inaugural Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) Women’s Under-23 Beach Volleyball Tour’s first-leg final.

The Jamaicans went down 21-18, 21-19 in the final on Sunday, which enabled the Trinidadians to remain unbeaten over the three days of the six-team tournament and also not drop a set for the duration.

According to Selvon, the Trinidad and Tobago aggregation was extremely happy to top the tournament.

“It was a very competitive match and I would say it was the toughest test in the competition and we are happy that we managed to pull through,” Selvon said.

Choon added: “we just came out to have fun in a very friendly environment for the sport and we hope to continue to win as we go along on the tour.”

In the semi-finals, Choon and Selvon defeated Amber Simons and Kaylee Trott of Bermuda 2-0 (21-14, 21-7), while Jamaica’s Parchment and Ashman outplayed Cayman Islands’ sisters Anjia and Brianna Delapenha 2-0 (21-14, 21-15).

Before the semi-finals, Jamaica’s Ashman suffered an allergic reaction to an insect bite and received medical attention after the win, before returning to put up a determined effort in the final.

The second leg of the CAZOVA Tour will also serve off at the same venue in Santa Cruz from August 26-28 and will see teams from Suriname, Barbados and Turks and Caicos added to the men’s competition.

The North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA), following the two legs in Trinidad and Tobago, is expected to host the Under-23 event in the Cayman Islands at a later date. CAZOVA will host the remaining stops in Aruba, Jamaica and Bonaire in December.
