Western Bureau:

After a stunning defeat on Saturday, 12-time champions Cornwall College will be looking to get back to winning ways in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) daCosta Cup football competition when they host Anchovy High School this afternoon.

The red and gold-clad boys from Montego Bay suffered a 2-1 loss to Green Pond High at the weekend to slip to second with three points from two games in the Zone A standings. Green Pond head the zone with six points from their two games. The leaders will also be in action away to Irwin High today. The third match in the zone will see St James High entertain Maldon High.

Dr Dean Weatherly, the coach of Cornwall, said they are looking to bounce back from a fluke defeat and prove the doubters wrong.

“That was an anomaly. If you saw the game it was obvious we spent most of the game in their half. However, that’s how football goes when you get the chances and don’t take them, you pay dearly. It is a learning curve for us, so we just have to build on it,” Weatherly said.

“We need to bounce back strongly because our aim is to top the zone even though people are already saying we can’t do it and that our team is deficient. I don’t even bother to worry about what is being said. I know the hard work that is being put in,” he added.

Garfield Anderson, coach of Anchovy High, said this season will be more of a learning curve for his very young squad but he is hoping they can spoil a few parties and surprise even themselves.

“We are a very green team. None of them (players) have even played under-16 more so daCosta Cup. We are starting from scratch but we know nothing is impossible in football. We are going there to apply ourselves against a strong Cornwall College team. We are an ambitious bunch so if we can upset the top teams, it would be good for us,” Anderson said.

Over in Zone I action, a doubleheader at Drax Hall in St Ann will see Brown’s Town High taking on Oracabessa High in the early kickoff at 1 p.m. before Ocho Rios High battle Marcus Garvey High in the 3 p.m. kickoff.
