Waterford High School coach, Kevin Reid, says despite being the underdogs for today’s Manning Cup match against Group A leaders and favourites Kingston College, he is positive his team can get a good result from the game. Kick-off time is 3:30 p.m. at the Stadium East field.

Waterford are third in the group on 11 points from six matches, seven points adrift of their opponents, and despite coming off a loss to the other North Street-based school, St George’s College, in their last match, Reid said they are now more motivated than before.

“I am looking forward to the game. It is going to be a very exciting game. Both teams play similar football, so there will be a lot of attacking football.

“It is not going to be an easy match. We are playing the defending champions, a more talented team than us. But this is football and it depends on if these guys want it more.

“So we are going there to fight and hope for the best. We will be playing a quality team, so we are not going to dominate. But we will be seeking to come away with three points. If not, we will try to leave with at least one,” he insisted.

TOP TWO SPOT

Waterford are still in the race for a top two spot, sitting just four points off second place St George’s with four matches remaining. Reid does not think a loss will threaten their chances of a second-round berth.

He noted also that they have taken some positive lessons from their defeat to St George’s, which has made them stronger mentally.

“The loss has actually improved the spirit because they know they can be beaten if they do not do what is needed. So the defeat was a positive because they have tasted victory. They know what it is to draw, and they have tasted defeat.

“So it is up to the players what they want. So the team that wants it more will come out on top today,”he said.

Kingston College coach Raymond Watson said despite not seeing the St Catherine team in action, he has nothing but a win on his mind.

“I have not seen the Waterford team play. But I guess everyone has seen us because we have had two TV games. They have, however, been beaten by St George’s and played to a draw with Calabar High, and I think we are better than both St George’s and Calabar. So I expect nothing less than three points,” he said.

In other Group A games today, St George’s host Calabar at Winchester Park and Meadowbrook High play Ardenne High at Constant Spring. All games start at 3.30.pm.

Calabar sit fourth in the group on eight points while Ardenne and Meadowbrook are yet to get off the mark.
