#Carifta2023 | Smith dominates women’s under-20 400mhs, Jamaicans settle for silver, bronze
The United States Virgin Islands Michelle Smith, like she did as an under-17 in Kingston, Jamaica last year, was dominant this afternoon now that she is an under-20 athlete at the 50th Carifta Games in Nassau, Bahamas.
Smith, running in the final of the women’s 400-metre hurdles inside the Thomas A Robinson Stadium, was supreme, storming to 57.69 seconds to best Jamaicans Tonyan Beckford, 58.94, and Alliah Baker, 59.55.
Beckford and Baker tried to get out of the blocks quickly but when they turned onto the backstretch, Smith was gone.
There was the thought that maybe she would weaken in the final 150 metres, but that also didn’t happen.
