THE Linval Dixon-coached Haile Selassie High picked up their second win of the 2023 ISSA Manning Cup competition with a 2-0 victory over Group C rivals Dunoon Technical at Payne Avenue yesterday.

Haile Selassie, who started like a house on fire, went up 1-0 as early as the first minute as Phillip Hudson calmly converted his effort following a neat all-round team build- up which sent the Haile Selassie supporters gathered at the school grounds into a frenzy. Dunoon Technical, who were visibly shocked by their opponents’ frenetic start to the afternoon’s encounter, tried to compose themselves but generating goalscoring opportunities from ball possession were few and far between.

Dunoon’s Habbie Mohammed, who seemed likely to score from his rampaging runs into the box, was easily kept out by the Haile Selassie defenders.

Like they did in the first half, Haile Selassie went 2-0 with their first attack in the second half as Jahwan Payne’s brilliant left-footed effort proved too good for custodian Akel Henry. As the game progressed, Dunoon’s chances lessened as collectively, Haile Selassie took full control of the game.

Dixon, the head coach of Haile Selassie, stated that he was happy to win the three points but believes the team has to work on converting more of their opportunities.

“You could see the anxiety from the team, they really did well and I’m sure they can do much better. I’m happy for the win as our attacking force was really good. We scored two, however, we could have scored another three, but such is the nature of the game. We have to work on converting more of our chances and put them away,” Dixon stated.

Jahmai Pettigrew, head coach of Dunoon Technical, said the hostile environment proved too much for his young team to handle. He, however, added that this squad is a work in progress and they would try to improve as the season continues.

“I wasn’t pleased with how we started the game and also the second half. We gave up a goal in the first 15 seconds of each half and that means we weren’t focused on the game. I think the environment got the better of the players, but we just have to go back to the training ground and try again,” Pettigrew said.
