Zone C’s hot Trelawny derby left William Knibb Memorial High on life support as they were defeated 2-0 by hosts Cedric Titus High School in a rescheduled ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup match yesterday.

In a very intense game, Terron Eccleston scored in the 42nd minute and Kamari Gordon in the 77th minute for Cedric Titus. Cedric Titus are unbeaten this season and are on top of Zone C with 22 points. William Knibb are fifth in the Zone with 12 points.

Cedric Titus got things right tactically in the first half with an equal mixture of attack and defence. They went ahead late in the first half when Eccleston scored with a volley after an error by William Knibb’s goalkeeper Kemal Benjamin.

The goal appeared to have knocked the wind out of William Knibb and Gordon curled a free kick past the goalkeeper with 13 minutes to go to give his team all three points.

The game had started on Saturday but was stopped in the 37th minute due to lightning.

Wade Crawford, technical director of Cedric Titus, said the team was more confident playing at home.

“These boys knew what they had to do and defended their home turf. For the past three years, we have been on the losing end at William Knibb but we have not lost to them here. Even though we started slow on Saturday, we would have gotten into the game,” Crawford said.

“We knew they would be coming with a purpose as they needed the three points more than us. The field was wet on Saturday, and the boys weren’t into it but we are more of a second-half team,” he added.

Dwight Jeremiah, coach of William Knibb, said it was not a good game for his team.

“Physically, they were up for it today and probably wanted it a little more than us. They shouldn’t be because on paper we needed it more.

“However, we didn’t get going today, and I think the first goal, the error by our goalkeeper really allowed Cedric Titus to play their type of game,” Jeremiah said.

He added: “We were chasing the game, and once you are doing that, we are unable to play our passing game. We made some changes, but the crosses weren’t good today.”
