Tivoli High kept their lead atop Group B of the ISSA Manning Cup after a Shacquwell Henry brace carried them to a convincing 4-0 win over Spanish Town High at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.

The result saw Tivoli climbing to 16 points, four more than Kingston Technical, while defending champions Jamaica College are third on nine points. Jamaica College, however, have two matches in hand.

Coach Christopher Nicholas said his expectation of the team is coming to pass and he is proud to see how they have taken on the challenge this season.

“As the season progresses, we are getting better and better. That is what I have been expecting and it’s coming to pass.

“Honestly, I feel proud of these boys. It’s not too much to celebrate but it’s getting the job done and topping the group. That is exactly what we want. I am very pleased,” he commented.

He added that their performance has been a big boost to the players’ confidence and expectation and that it is about managing the players from here on.

“It is a tricky situation but now we have to coach and not just on the field, but off the field and in the classroom because now is the time to keep our focus and get it done,” the former national player said.

It took the west Kingston-based school just 15 minutes to break the deadlock, thanks to Daniel Watson’s strike.

Three minutes later, Henry got the first of his two goals and Ryan-Oneil Francis made it 3-0 with a looping header just before half-time.

Tivoli wasted a number of chances at the start of the second half. Spanish Town then had a good spell after the first 10 minutes and wasted a few good chances to cut the deficit and they were made to pay when Henry stabbed home a loose ball from six yards after a save by the Spanish Town goalkeeper in the 75th minute.

Spanish Town coach Andrew Hines said simple errors cost them the game.

“First half we just gave it away. We gave away some simple opportunities and we had to play catch-up,” Hines said.
