Russians ominous ahead of d’Cup second round

Published:Wednesday | October 11, 2023 | 12:10 AM

RUSEA’S HIGH School sounded a warning signal during their penultimate game of this season’s ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup first round with an 8-0 hammering of Merlene Ottey High School at home yesterday.

The Russians, who have been announcing a resurgence this season, had braces from Deonjay Brown (32nd and 44th minutes), Xavier James (33’ and 34’), and Davalio Gillard (60’ and 80’) on their way to their biggest victory to date.

Alaqa Logan scored in the 45th and Cory Palmer added to the tally in the 65th to complete the rout.

The win put the Russians on 19 points from seven games, but more impressively, means, headed into their top-of-the-table clash against Frome, they have just one blip, a 0-0 draw against Green Island in their last outing.

Rusea’s opened their season with the 6-1 thrashing of Cambridge before squeezing out a 1-0 victory over Green Island. In the first leg of their fixture against Merlene Ottey they had won 5-0, before clipping the zone’s second-place qualifiers Frome, 1-0. A 4-0 win over Cambridge marked their other fixture, meaning the former champions have conceded just once this season.

In the other game from the group, Green Island were big 5-0 winners over Cambridge, leaving them third in the zone on 13 points from their eight games.

Frome, who were idle today, have 18 points ahead of their final fixture against the Russians at home on Friday.
