Rio de Janeiro, Brazil declares financial emergency ahead of games

Less than 50 days before the start of the Olympic Games, the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro has declared a financial emergency.

The 2016 Olympic Games is schedule to be held in Rio from August 5 to 21.

However, interim Governor Francisco Dornelles says the financial crisis, caused by a tax shortfall, could prevent the state from honouring commitments for the Games.

Most public funding for the Olympics has come from Rio's city government, but the state is responsible for areas such as transport and policing.

Brazil’s interim President Michel Temer has promised significant financial help.
