T&T flu deaths hit 37

 

PORT-OF-SPAIN (CMC):

The Ministry of Health says the number of people who have died as a result of the influenza virus has risen to 37, as it reiterated an appeal for persons to get vaccinated.

In a statement, the ministry said that as of last Friday, the cumulative number of vaccines administered to the public for this flu season was 48,411. The number of suspected influenza cases for the year was 3,434.

 

 

Commish to weed out rogue Trinidad cops

 

PORT-OF-SPAIN (CMC):

Police Commissioner Gary Griffith said Tuesday that crime initiatives would be rolled out in the new year, including plans to weed the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) of rogue cops.

Griffith, speaking at the weekly TTPS news conference, was also critical of sections of the media for having what her termed “an agenda” in wanting him out of the service.

“I am fighting a battle here. The biggest problem I have in reducing crime is the enemy within,” Griffith said.

 

 

Haiti president to skip Independence event

 

PORT-AU-PRINCE (CMC):

President Jovenel Moise will not travel to d’armes of Gonaïves on Wednesday to commemorate the 216th anniversary of the Independence of Haiti, a senior aide has confirmed.

Opposition parties have been staging demonstrations throughout the year calling on Moise to step down from office and had been planning similar action for Gonaives to celebrate Independence Day with a “patriotic vigil” and a ceremony in memory of activists who died during the anti-government protests.
