Horace Payne Mem bridge tourney


Rex James and Judy Ziadie cemented their current position as Jamaica's most successful match points pair with another Monday night win when their 57.54 per cent round was good enough to defeat Ulla Dahl and Rosie Mahfood (53.77 per cent) in the latest leg of the year-long Horace Payne Memorial Tournament. Michael and Carol Coore (52.77 per cent) finished third.


James and Ziadie's play improved on Wednesday night to 59.72 per cent, but they were relegated to second by Calvin Wong and Charles Williams' outstanding 61.11 per cent score on a night when the top four pairs all exceeded 55 per cent. Winston Boyne/Norma Tavares (58.33 per cent) were third and Audley Astwood/Winston Chin-You (56.25 per cent) fourth.

Village Link scores another upset

Village Link scored another upset in the Portmore/St Catherine domino league last Sunday when they clipped former champions Caribbean Classic 300-299 in an exciting countdown at Garveymeade Sports Club.

With this one-point victory in the penultimate round of Division One, giant-killers Village Link have a good chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Eagle View, whose match against Hurricane last Sunday was postponed, lead the standings with 70 points from 20 matches, followed by defending champions Fort International with 63 from 21, Caribbean Classic third with 61 points from 20 matches, followed by North Street United fourth with 47 from 21, Ackee Pod, fifth, with 46 from 21, Prozz and Conzz 45 from 20, Village Link seventh, with 45 from 21, Right Stuff 43 from 19 and in ninth position, Eradication with 40 from 19.Tomorrow's feature Division One match (final round) pits Caribbean Classic against Fort International at Portmore Lane, starting at 11:30 a.m.

In other matches played last Sunday, Fort International drubbed Prozz and Conzz 300-232, Ackee Pod beat ISCF, who threw in the towel at 178, Right Stuff defeated North Street United 300-289, and Masterpiece whipped Eradication 300-253.

Meanwhile, Colours Sports Club, Ken's Wildflower, Lime Tree Grove and Black Rooster have advanced to the May 30 semi-finals of the Division Two league following contrasting wins in the quarter-final round last Sunday.

Colours defeated Caymanas Track Domino Club 300-269 at Portmore Lane, Ken's Wildflower beat Marlie Mount 300-264 at McCooks Pen, Black Rooster beat Triple X Old Harbour 300-271 at Lime Tree Grove, and Lime Tree clipped Seamaster 300-299 in an exciting countdown at Marlie Mount. The draw for the semis will see Colours up against Lime Tree and Ken's Wildflower vs Black Rooster.

Both semi-final matches will be played at Caymanas Park.

Pattex Cup skittles

Big-name teams Eagles and Eastern All-Stars won their quarter-final matches in the Pattex Cup skittles competition last Sunday in St Ann's Bay to advance to the semi-finals tomorrow at Eastern Skittles Club, 113 Windward Road.

Eagles, who topped the preliminary round, beat Portmore's The Dip 7-4. while Eastern All-Stars from east Kingston got by House of Peace 6-4.

The other qualifiers were Willies Strikers and Mister C from Spanish Town.

Willies from Three Miles stopped Starliner 6-4, while Mister C also defeated Mystix 6-4 to advance.

Tomorrow's semi-finals will see Eagles opposing Mister C in the first match at 1 p.m., followed by Eastern vs Willies. The winners will meet in the May 16 final at Mystix, 783/4 Hagley Park Road.

Meanwhile, three players from the Corporate Area defeated their rural counterparts last Sunday in St Ann's Bay to advance in the Sistas singles championship.

Former champion Keith Barrett (Eastern) blanked K. Scott from St Ann 2-0, Sidney Carrington (Eastern) also won 2-0 against W. Scott, while Garfield Samuels (Rowe's Strikers) beat another rural player, O. Sewell, 2-0. The only Corporate Area player to lose was Eagles' Emmanuel Munda. He was beaten 2-1 by O. Grant from Zorro Skittles Club in St Ann's Bay.

LIME beat JUTC in BH cricket

Defending champions LIME made it two wins from as many matches in the Reggae Jammin Business House 50-over cricket league last Sunday when they defeated newcomers JUTC by 31 runs at José Marti Technical School.

Batting first, LIME made 207 for five off their allotted overs - Yanique Elliott 76 not out, Marvin Lobban 28, Fitzroy Peterkin 27; Raymond Francis 3-47, Miguel Francis 2-48. JUTC made 176 for eight - Richard Allen 62, Adrian Bartley 58, Damion Jacobs 3-43.

AT MICO: High-riding newcomers OCS Electrical defeated NHT by eight wickets to make it two in a row. NHT 156 - Shawn Earle 50, national player Bevan Brown 35; Oneil Dunn 2-8, Duane Thompson 2-25, Ralston Nelson 2-35. OCS Electrical 157 for two - Junior Stewart 85, national player Nkrumah Bonner 53 not out.

AT SPRING VILLAGE: Jamaica Broilers rebounded from their loss to OSC Electrical in the opening round to beat National Continental Baking Company by 69 runs. Broilers 187 all out - Fabian Lakeman 73, Noel Officer 39; Vander Rowe 5-53, Oneil Weir 4-42. Continental Baking Company 118 - Yanique Henry 37, Rowe 25; Nicoy Lindo 4-25, Robert Turner 4-26.

AT CHALMERS AVENUE: Digicel beat Sagicor Life by six wickets. Sagicor 160 - Hugh Meredith 35, Shane Ricketts 34; Randy Carter 4-43, Jowayne Robinson 2-23. Digicel 162 for 4 - Carter 38, Shemar Anderson 34.

AT NWC, MONA: National Water Commission defeated Jamalco by four wickets. Jamalco 168 - Calvert Whittick 67, Winston Osbourne 39; Gary Francis 5-35, Carlos Francis 3-26. NWC 170 for 6 - Mean Dowe 66, Duran Whyte 34; Derrick Spence 4-28.

The competition moves into its third round tomorrow with Digicel vs Jamaica Broilers at Kensington Park, LIME vs NHT at Chalmers Avenue, OCS Electrical vs NWC at Jacisera Park, Jamalco vs Sagicor at Jamalco, and Continental Baking Company vs JUTC at Jamaica College. All matches start at 10 a.m.

Downs win U-20 league

Downs from Manchester carved out a 6-5 penalty-kicks win over St Catherine's Meadows in the final of the U-20 South Central St Catherine Super League last Sunday.

Miquel Barnaby, Denmark Gillings, Anthony Carter, Deshorn Brown, Sydney Gordon and Alburn Facey scored Downs' penalties, while Andrew Lewin, Roshane Smith, Kevin McDonald, Jamie Hall and Oshane Smith netted their kicks. Oshane Smith gave Meadows a 1-0 lead after 61 minutes, which was shortlived as top marksman, Deshorn Brown (63rd minute), pushed the game into extra time.

At the end of the match, Downs' captain, Denmark Gillings, collected the championship trophy from Dale Spencer, chairman of the South Central Confederation, with a jubilant Downs players cheering in the background.

Meadows copped the Senior Super League crown after a 1-0 win over Newlands courtesy of a spectacular 51st-minute strike from substitute Orville Newell. Meadows now join Reno, and Cavalier in the play-offs for the Digicel Premier League. Either York United or Benifica from the Eastern Confederation will join the three qualifiers.

Faith Temple take on Miracle Open Bible

Faith Temple New Testament take on Miracle Open Bible in Zone Two of the Power of Faith Ministries Church Twenty/20 Cricket League at the Lime Tree Oval in St Catherine. Match time is 10 a.m.

Miracle need to win this match, to stay in the competition, as a loss will see them crashing out. They lost their first match by 10 wickets to Old Harbour New Testament. In games last Saturday, Zone Two leaders Old Harbour New Testament defeated Power of Faith International by eight wickets to win their second game in a row, while Power of Faith Seniors defeated Braeton New Testament by five wickets.

Racing to victory

Racing United will try and maintain their 1-0 advantage over rivals Christian Pen in the second-leg final of the e-Services-sponsored Portmore Division Two Football league tomorrow at Ferdie Neita Park in Braeton. Match time is 1 p.m.

Racing's road to the final saw them disposing of Westport 5-3 on aggregate, winning the second leg 3-2. Christian Pen got by arch-rivals Watson Grove 2-1 on aggregate, despite losing 1-0 in the second leg. The Division Two final precedes the Digicel Premier League match between Portmore United and Rivoli United. With one game to go after tomorrow's fixture, Portmore need only a draw to stay in top-flight football.

Portmore-Cumberland face-off

Debutantes Portmore United, fresh from their 5-0 drubbing of Watson Grove last Saturday, will be gunning for another victory when they oppose defending champions Cumberland in the feature match of the Senator Arthur Williams-sponsored Portmore Under-15 Football League today at the Ferdie Neita Park. Kick-off time is 3 p.m.

In the opening match at the venue at 1 p.m., Greater Portmore take on Hellshire United.

At the Passagefort football field, Passagefort United and Watson Grove go after their first points of the season in a one o'clock opener, while returnees Clifton challenge Westport at 3. In a game last Saturday, Clifton drew 0-0 with Hellshire United.
