In recognition of the sterling leadership and accomplishments
of their immediate past dean, William Tavares-Finson, the Consular
Corps of Jamaica held a cocktail reception in his honour on Thursday,
April 29.

The offices of the Consulate of Ukraine proved
quite comfy for the gathering as they fêted the jocular gent. The new
dean, Robert MacMillan, said that underneath the happy-go-lucky persona
was a deep-thinking person and performer. He lauded Tavares-Finson's
commitment and work ethic in the corps.

But Tavares-Finson is now a
man without a country, as Nicaragua, which he represented, now has a
resident ambassador, so there is no longer a need for an honorary
consul. But MacMillan opined, "I know we haven't seen the last of
William."

Nicaraguan Ambassador David MacField, who revealed his
grandfather was from St Ann, showered his own praise and gifts on
Tavares-Finson. In his usual manner, the guest of honour thanked all for
the kind words, citing that it was assistant Janice Wright who did all
the work.

When asked if he was interested in politics, he ribbed
older brother Tom by saying, "our family's not good with elections." He
then ended with, "thank you all and autographs are being signed." A real
character!
