Manley Airport win BH football rally

Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) won their first Kingston & St Andrew Business House one-day five-a-side football rally and took home the Pronto-Porridge Mix trophy last Saturday, when they defeated National Water Commission (NWC) 2-1 in the final at the NWC playing field. The competition attracted 18 teams. NMIA and NWC clipped Wray & Nephew and Gleaner Company 2-1 in the semi finals.

In the final, NWC took the lead in the 29th minute via a goal from Kirk Edwards. Garfield Sutherland got the equaliser for NMIA in the 22nd minute, forcing the match into extra time. With only a minute remaining in the match, NWC goalkeeper Patrick Williams blundered by rolling the ball straight to Khari Caine, who fired past him to seal the issue.

The KSAFA/Western Sports-sponsored Business House Football League competition kicks off tomorrow with the dress parade and a double-header at the NWC playing field, Mona, starting at 1 p.m.

Clarendon Major League

With three rounds to be completed, the race for the 2010 Captain's Bakery Clarendon Major League remains a two-horse race.

Leading the charge are the firm favourites New Bowens on 36 points. In hot pursuit are Milk River on 33 points. Quite interestingly, these two boast the current top goalscorers - Leon Callaghan (13) who represents New Bowens, while Jemeal Forrester, who has scored 10 goals so far, plays for Milk River.

A third team, Rock River, is on 28 points, but merely have a mathematical chance at the championship, which is being run on a straight league basis.

New Bowens, who beat relegation-bound Young Strikers 1-0 last weekend, have two games to go. They will complete their fixtures next Thursday, May 27 against Gimme-Me-Bit.

Milk River seemingly have a glorious opportunity to make the championship their own, if they can maximise their last three remaining encounters. After spurning the chance to really put the heat on New Bowens after a 2-2 draw against Longwood in last weekend's round, they cannot afford to drop the baton when they host Rock River tomorrow.

Two other games are on this weekend. There is the mid-table battle between sixth-place Longwood (18 pts) and Sunnyside (14 pts) today, while tomorrow at Kemps Hill High playing field, major relegation battle involves Young Strikers and Gayle.

Big clashes on in church cricket

Labour Day weekend will be buzzing with excitement as the preliminary round of the Power of Faith Twenty/20 Church Cricket League comes to a close at Lime Tree Oval, St Catherine. Zone One leaders Power of Faith Seniors (eight points) will secure their semi-final place if they defeat Jamaica Evangelistic Centre (four points) in the opening game this morning at Lime Tree Oval at 9:35. In the feature game at the venue at 1:35 p.m., Zone Two leaders Old Harbour (eight points) challenge Faith Temple (four points).

On Monday, JEC take on Braeton New Testament at 9:35 a.m., while PFM International end the preliminary round with a game against Old Harbour New Testament.

Cumberland hunt third win

Leaders Cumberland (seven points) will be gunning for their third win in four tries, as they take on Greater Portmore in a fourth-round game in the Senator Arthur Williams-sponsored Portmore Under-15 Football League at the Watson Grove football field on Sunday, match time 1 p.m. In the second game at the venue, Clifton, hungry for their first win of the season, tackle Watson Grove at 3 p.m.

At Ferdie Neita Park, Passagefort United oppose Westport at 1 p.m., while in the feature match at 3 p.m. Portmore United battle Hellshire United. In last Saturday's third round, all games ended in draws. Cumberland drew 0-0 with Watson Grove, so too Westport and Hellshire United, while Clifton drew 1-1 with Greater Portmore and Portmore United were all square at 1-1 with Passagefort United.

Christian Pen are KO champs

Christian Pen won the third and final title on offer when they defeated Daytona 2-1 in extra time in the final of the Colin Fagan-sponsored Portmore Football League knockout at the Passagefort field last Sunday. Sheldon Sharpe (35th) and Jason Nunes 112th (penalty) in extra time scored for Christian Pen, while Keniko Thomas (87th) netted for Daytona.

At the end of the match, Colin Fagan, member of parliament for South East St Catherine, handed over the championship trophy to the winning team. Christian Pen and league champions Racing United will play in next season's St Catherine Division One.

Belair invitational track meet

The Belair High School ground on deCarteret Road in Mandeville should be abuzz with activity today, as it hosts the second year of an invitational track meet designed for students of the primary and preparatory school age.

Action starts at 9 a.m. and the organisers have given a commitment to complete all events, as well as a short presentation ceremony, by 5 p.m. The events to be contested are: Girls and boys 50m, 60m, 80m, 100m, 150m, 200m, 400m, long jump, and relays featuring 4x200, 4x100 and 4x50. The island's privately owned preparatory schools are the main target, as it is a precursor to their national championships.

The meet was organised for the first time last year and, despite rain, was a huge hit with track and field fans. More than 600 athletes took part, representing 16 schools, including Corporate Area-based Vaz and Mona Prep, St Catherine Prep, Mount Alvernia of Montego, and central representatives Mt St Joseph and host Belair. These popular schools will again return as part of a larger contingent from 22 schools, making this year's meet much bigger and competitive. Chief organiser is Jamaica's first female Olympic gold medallist, Deon Hemmings-McCatty.

Last year, Belair's Sidney Marshall emerged Champion Girl. She went on to accomplish the same feat at the National Preparatory Schools' Championships.

INSPORT football competition

St Catherine and Clarendon will feature prominently in a pilot project by INSPORT to launch a new football competition for the island's basic schools.

While INSPORT will handle the whole organisation of the competition, sponsorship comes from another government agency, the Sports Development Foundation (SDF).

The competition will be restricted to Under Sevens, using a five-a-side format, and games will last for 20 minutes. A size three ball will be used and coaches can utilise an unlimited number of substitutes.

The St Catherine leg of the competition will kick off next Tuesday at G.C. Foster College starting at 10 a.m. Some 20 schools are confirmed. Clarendon will have their launch three days later, on May 27, involving 22 schools at a venue to be confirmed.

In preparation for the competition, INSPORT hosted two workshops each for the pilot parishes. Among the topics discussed were team management as well as a practical element featuring "techniques of small-sided games". Presenters for the Clarendon workshops were former national player Chris Dawes and local coaches Warren Simpson and Garfield Carney.
