Lyew wins skittles final at last

Winston 'Wimpy' Lyew of Willies Strikers, Three Miles, won the 2010 Sistas Skittles Singles Championship last Sunday, when he defeated former champion, Keith Barrett from Eastern All-Stars 3-1 in the best-of-five final at Mystix Sports Bar, Hagley Park Road.

After contesting and losing three previous finals, Lyew finally came good to win the title for the first time.

Significantly, he was beaten in his very first final by Barrett, when both were young men back in 1988. It took him 22 years to gain his revenge.

Lyew had previously lost to Eastern's Fitzroy Blair in 2007 and it was the general belief that nerves got the better of him in such situations. However, he proved his detractors wrong on Sunday, looking focused and playing confidently to beat Barrett 1440-0640 in the first game, and although losing the second, came back to win the last two in fine style.

Lyew thus collected the $60,000 prize and trophy presented by Kingsley Morris and Hortense James, both representing sponsors. Henkel 'Keithy' Barrett also received a trophy and $30,000.

En route to the final, Lyew defeated Eastern's Sidney Carrington 3-1 in one semi-final, while Barrett put away five-time champion Robert McKen from Eagles 3-1 in the next.

Eagles' captain, Clinton 'Fly Up' Thompson, was named MVP for the recently concluded Pattex Cup league won by Eastern Al-Stars. Sonia Lindo, Camille Clarke, Orville Mighty, and Ricardo Henry capped awards as best new players.
