Birthday surprise

WESTERN BUREAU:
The people who know John Miller, know that he is the consummate father and son, and his seven children and 91-year-old mother Olive are the apples of his eyes.
The children know, too, and so it came easy for them to say thanks to this dedicated family man by surprising him on his 50th birthday, two weeks ago, with a party they paid for.
Held in the ballroom of the Jamaica Grandiosa Hotel, in the second city, Miller, one of the city's most respected electrical contractors was tricked into attending the event. His son Nicholas was used as the decoy.
"If every Jamaican could emulate the way John deals with family," said Charles Sinclair, mayor of Montego Bay, in praising the man he has come to respect over the years. "I feel specially privileged to be called to celebrate this day with John," said Sinclair.
Like Sinclair, all his children spoke about his kindness to them through a video presentation packed full of love.
"John, you are the consummate professional, a dedicated family man, a philanthropist who is just your regular man," were the words that came from friend Don Daley, who doubled as emcee of the evening.
It is safe to describe John Miller as a star. "You don't always see them, but they are always there," said his niece Abigay Miller.
Miller's friend George Edwards and wife Jacqueline, Gloria Henry, Byron Forbes, Cedric and Erica Whittingham, Dave and Majel Spencer, Winston Christie, Andrew and Georgia Miller were among the group of people in attendance.
