Who are the Claro Festival contestants?
The Gleaner continues to acquaint our readers with the con-testants in the Claro Jamaica Cultural Development Commission's Festival Song Competition. Have you met Petrol?
Song title: Island in the sun
Petrol hails from the quiet district of Mount Hindmost, Clarendon, and says he was born with a passion for music.
His involvement in music started at the tender age of six, when he was a member of the children's church choir.
He made his recognised debut when he performed at an annual community concert in 1986, after which he became a regular singer on the Smokey Roots sound system.
Petrol released his first single entitled Give us Strength with a trio called the Fearless Crew. However, his first solo single, Mama, was recorded and released on the Roaring Lion label in 1999.
The following year, his most popular single Ski-ba-do-ba-do (Shouldn't do mi dat) was recorded and released; this was done on the Studio Max label.
He has also performed at major shows such as Original Dancehall Jam Jam and Island Explosion. His aspiration is to continue delivering conscious and positive music that will have an impact on others.
