ANGUILLA - Airport remains closed

Anguilla (CMC):

The Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport remained closed yesterday after the sole firetruck that provides services to the facility broke down.

Corporate communications manager with the regional airline, LIAT, Desmond Brown confirmed that the airline was forced to cancel its Anguilla operations.

"Two flights were cancelled on Monday and we have also cancelled those flights which were scheduled to operate today," Brown said.

Number one priority

"The safety of our passengers and crew is our number one priority so we will just have to wait for the reopening of the airport before we can begin to operate flights to and from Anguilla," he added.

An official, who spoke with the Caribbean Media Corporation on condition of anonymity, said that the firetruck needs a part which is not available on the island and the absence of flights into the island is hampering efforts to obtain the part overseas.

It was not immediately clear how soon the airport would re-open, but the official said "from how things are looking right now, it could remain closed for at least another 48 hours."
