Windwards lead Jamaica, go top of standings

Opener Atticus Browne hit his maiden TCL West Indies Under-19 century to guide the Windward Islands to first innings points against defending champions Jamaica and fire them to the top of the points standings after the end of the fourth round yesterday.

Batting the entire final day after the scheduled second day (Wednesday) was completely washed out, the Windwards were eventually dismissed for 290 in the last of the mandatory 15 overs, with Browne scoring a well-accumulated 106 before he was run out.

The young Vincentian left-hander hit 11 boundaries, faced 306 balls and batted for a marathon 306 minutes to steer the Windwards past Jamaica's first innings total of 177 made on the opening day (Tuesday).

"Browne showed a remarkable display of maturity under the circumstances, and Dwight Thomas lent good support in that crucial fifth-wicket partnership," Windwards manager Shawn Edward told CMC Sports.

His efforts left the Windwards on 27 points, with Jamaica on 24 points in second and Barbados back in third on 21 points.

Playing at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, Browne added 120 for the fifth wicket with St Lucian middle-order batsman Thomas, who made 67 with five fours off 157 balls and in 200 minutes at the crease.

Kavem Hodge was the next best contributor for the Windwards with 28 while skipper Audie Alexander, Levaughn Lewis and Jennard Paul all made 15 in the lower order.

Fast bowler Nicholson Gordon finished with three for 73 and slow bowler Donovan Nelson captured two for 54 to lead the bowling for Jamaica.
