Nelson double

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (CMC):

Tyrone Nelson and Rohan Singh completed doubles, as Caribbean jockeys won half of the 10-race card on Saturday at Assiniboia Downs.

Jamaican Nelson cemented himself in fifth place on 29 wins, and Guyanese Singh was two places below on 23 wins on a card, when Barbadian Juan Crawford also won to keep his 10th place on 12 wins.

Nelson drew off through the stretch on the 4-1 chance Yankee Glider to win 6 3/4-lengths clear in the CAN $6,200 fourth race going 1,600m. Nelson completed his double, when he rallied four wide to get up in time on the 3-2 favourite Vigilante Law, which won the CAN $10,500 eighth race going 1,600m by a neck.

Bridgmohan wins

CHESTER, West Virginia (CMC):

Shaun Bridgmohan won his 11th stakes race for the year on Saturday's nine-race card at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort. The Jamaican jockey drove the 4-1 chance Fastation to victory in the US $85,000 Mountaineer Juvenile Fillies Stakes by three quarters-of-a-length. Fastation completed 1,200 metres in one minute, 11.89 seconds.

Bridgmohan now has stakes wins at four American tracks this season. He has won six times at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, Louisiana, three times at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, and once at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa.

Long shot

WASHINGTON (AP):

David Nalbandian became the first player ranked outside the top 100 to win an ATP title in 2010, using his typically strong service returns and effective baseline game to beat No. 25 Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 6-2, 7-6 (4) yesterday in the Legg Mason Classic final. It is the Argentine's 11th career title, but his first on U.S. soil and first anywhere in 1 1/2 years. He had not entered a tournament since April, sidelined by a bad left hamstring. Before that, Nalbandian missed nearly 10 months starting in May 2009 because of hip surgery.

Brown, Robinson quit

LONDON (AP):

Defender Wes Brown and goalkeeper Paul Robinson retired from England duty yesterday just a day after being recalled to the squad, disrupting Fabio Capello's plans for Wednesday's friendly against Hungary. The under-fire coach plans to use the match to usher in a new era following England's woeful World Cup campaign, pointedly dropping 13 of the 23 players that went to South Africa and lost in the second round to Germany. After missing out on the tournament, Robinson and Brown - both 30 - had been brought back into the fold less than a month before qualifying begins for the 2012 European Championship.

Tiger stays No. 1

AKRON, Ohio (AP):

Despite the highest score of his career, Tiger Woods will stay No. 1 in the world for another week. Phil Mickelson had a chance to become No. 1 in the world-ranking for the first time in his career after Woods tied for 78th at the Bridgestone Invitational. That meant Mickelson needed only to finish alone in fourth place yesterday and he started the final round four shots out of the lead. Instead, he three-putted from four feet on the ninth hole and shot a 41 on the back nine. He made only one birdie and shot 78.

It was the first time since the 1998 British Open that Woods and Mickelson both shot 77 or higher. Mickelson will have another chance to go to No. 1 next week at the PGA Championship.
