New 800m world record

BERLIN (AP):

David Rudisha of Kenya has broken the men's 800-metre world record by running one minute, 41.09 seconds. Rudisha powered home to beat the previous record of 1:41.11 set by Wilson Kipketer of Denmark in Cologne, Germany, on August 24, 1997.

Rudisha broke the record at the Olympic stadium in Berlin, where he was a semi-finalist in the 800 at last year's World Championship.

"I saw I was inside world record pace in the final straight and I just went for it. This was really the first time I tried to break the record," said Rudisha, a 21-year-old former world junior champion.

"This was my first aim, to break the record. Now my next steps are to win World and Olympic titles," Rudisha said. "But I can still improve my world record."

Haiti in final

SINGAPORE (AP):

The Haitian under-15 boys' football team has reached the final at the Youth Olympics after defeating hosts Singapore 2-0. Jean Bonhomme's header in 38th minute and Daniel Gedeon's penalty in the 89th sealed the victory yesterday.

Haiti will meet Bolivia, which beat the Caribbean island nation 9-0 earlier in the tournament, in the gold medal match Wednes-day. Haiti defeated Vanuatu 2-1 last week to reach the semi-finals against Singapore. Singapore will face Montenegro for the bronze medal.

Barcelona unbeatable

BARCELONA, Spain (AP):

David Villa says Barcelona are unbeatable when they play their best, as they did in the Spanish Supercup victory against Sevilla. The Spain striker made his debut with Barcelona in Saturday's 4-0 win that saw the Catalan club clinch the trophy for a record ninth time.

Villa was quoted in the AS newspaper as saying "if we play at this level I can't see any team beating us".

Villa came on in the 57th minute and created several chances for the Spanish champions. Villa says "it was easy for me to adapt because I'm so used to playing with them".

Villa, who joined from Valencia for €40 million (US$50 million), is among eight Barcelona players who helped Spain win the World Cup in South Africa.
