South Stars, Orange Hill in 20/20 showdown

Published:Saturday | September 11, 2010 | 12:00 AM

South Stars of Manchester and Orange Hill from Westmoreland will square off tomorrow in the final of the SDC 20/20 National Community Cricket Competition at Alpart Sports Club, Nain, St Elizabeth, starting at 2 p.m.

The winning team will receive $500,000.

The day's proceedings will begin at 10 a.m., with the third-place play-off between losing semi-finalists Cheesefield and Mount Olivet.

Meanwhile, the finalists booked their place after contrasting semi-final wins at the Ultimate Sports Club in Discovery on Sunday.

Despite leaving it to the final over, Orange Hill successfully chased the 154 made by Cheesefield of St Catherine.

South Stars had no such worries though, as their massive score of 204 proved too much for the home side, Mount Olivet, who fell for 109 to lose by 95 runs.

The two teams are no strangers as they met in the second-round group of four that included Race Course of Clarendon and Barbary Hall of St Elizabeth. In fact, that game, played at the Comfort ground in Manchester, was somewhat of a final, in which South Stars needed to win to force a three-way tie on two wins each.

However, the Manchester team, which won the competition in 2008 but were beaten in the third-place play-off last year by De la Vega, easily triumphed.

Captain Courtney Allen, who starred last week with a top score of 83, put in a good all-round performance, taking four wickets in Orange Hill's 124, and returned to slam a quickfire 49 to help hand his team victory in only 12 overs. Other players expected to figure prominently for South Stars include fast bowler Prince Bromfield, Eukel Bromfield, Dean and Oshane Walters.

The most consistent performers for Orange Hill are Neika Banta, all-rounder Ewan Andrews, batsman Chandra Francis and the explosive left-hander Jason Thompson, who followed up his match-winning unbeaten 37 against De La Vega with an even more vital 39 in their semi-final win.

Among the sponsors are The Gleaner and Star newspapers, TVJ and the Sports Development Foundation.

In Zone 'B', Courts came out on top with 76 points, followed by NHT on 53, NCB 49 and Tastee in fourth on 25.

The draw for both Division One and Two will take place at Jacisera Park on Monday. The competition is run by the National Association of Domino Bodies.

Scotia win Inter-bankfive-a-side rally

Defending champions Scotiabank Group won both the dress parade and one-day five-a-side rally to signal the start of the 2010 JNBS-Western Sports-sponsored Norman Goodison Inter-bank football league at the NWC playing field, Mona, last Sunday.

After being adjudged winners of the dress parade for the second straight year ahead of eight participating teams, Scotiabank clipped JNBS 1-0 in extra time to win the one-day final, thanks to a goal from Waterhouse's Premier League player, Akeem Thenstead in the first minute of extra time.

The first slate of matches takes place tomorrow at two venues. At the NWC playing field, FirstCaribbean will oppose Pan Caribbean-Sagicor in the first match at 2 p.m. and at 4 p.m., Scotiabank take on Bank of Jamaica.

In the third match, RBTT will oppose JNBS at the Old Men's Hockey Field, Mona, starting at 3 p.m.

Top Hill, New Bowensin Jamalco final today

The final of the Jamalco Football League takes place today between Top Hill and New Bowens at the Jamalco Sports Club in Clarendon, starting at 3:30 p.m.

Prior to that, Savannah and Invincible will battle for third place. Both were handed sound beatings in their respective semi-finals played last weekend at the Wembley ground.

Peter Brown and Andrew Vanzie got the goals as New Bowens triumphed 2-0 over Savannah, while Top Hill stunned Invincible 4-0. Andrew Isaacs, who had scored only one goal in six matches to date, netted three times. His hat-trick put the game out of reach at half-time as they led 3-0. The rout was not completed until regular team scorer Alton Taylor got his fifth goal of the season.

Interestingly, apart from bragging rights and the $150,000 first prize, the contest also pits the top three goalscorers in the league - Brown, Taylor and Isaacs.

Topclash in Portmore domino

Passagefort United (12 points), still wounded from a surprise loss to Cumberland last Sunday, will have their mettle tested when they challenge leaders Portmore Lane Tigers (16 points) in Portmore Gardens tomorrow.

In other games, Westchester Nuckuz battle City Black Rock in Westchester, Cumberland welcome Garveymeade, Portsmouth United host Ken's Wildflower, while defending champs Westchester United entertain Waterford United.

Mile Gully, George Northin Cobbla final tomorrow

The champions of the Cobbla Church League will be known tomorrow when Mile Gully and George North face off at the Cobbla Youth Camp grounds, near Spaldings.

The competition, which has seen crowds in excess of a thousand people from the community in attendance each Sunday afternoon, is run by the New Testament Church of God in that area.

In last week's semi-finals, Mile Gully, who topped their preliminary zone, defeated Spring Ground 2-0. Kenroy Mullings, who is still in contention for the top goalscorer award, and Shawn Morris were the scorers.

In the second semi-final, the league's most exciting team, George North, put on a breathtaking display to overwhelm Village 4-0.

François Swaby, who represents Sporting Central in the Digicel Premier League and was available owing to a break arising from the friendly international against Costa Rica, scored twice. Avadine Ellington, who leads the goalscoring tables with eight, and Deano Henry completed the rout.

There will be no third-place play-off as the organisers have ruled Village ineligible due to their unsportsmanlike assault on the referee during last week's game.

Clarendon Business House battle forsecond round

The battle heats up tomorrow at the Mineral Heights Football field for remaining places in the second round of the Tait's Pharmacy-sponsored Clarendon Business House six-a-side football competition.

Juici Patties, which have put together an unbeaten streak of six wins, including a 1-0 victory over Transport last Sunday, is the only team assured of advancing to the next stage of the competition.

They have an unassailable six-point lead on the nearest challenger, Sinclair's Bargain Centre. Sinclair can, however, book their spot with just a draw tomorrow against fifth-place JNBS (8 pts). Transport Services can capitalise, providing Sinclair's stumble, with a likely victory against Epic Hardware, who are out of contention.

The situation in Zone One is even more complicated. Fire Brigade, which lost a glorious chance to secure their spot after suffering a 1-2 loss to JPS, lead the charge on 12 points, but have completed their preliminary fixture.

Their latest win came in midweek when they beat Carry Shell 2-1. Mack Chem and Government Agencies, who have played five matches each, are joint second on 11 points.

Fourth-place Glass & Windows, who led the zone at one stage, are on eight points and must win against Stewart's Hardware tomorrow to advance.

Big names for Wray and Nephew Twenty/20

Jamaica captain Tamar Lambert and former West Indies player Wavell Hinds are two big-name players who will be on show when the inaugural Wray and Nephew Portmore Twenty/20 Knockout Cricket League gets under way tomorrow at two venues in the Sunshine City.

Lambert will line up for Ken's Wildflower as they oppose Belmont in the feature match at Bridgeport Sports ground at 2 p.m. Junior Stewart, a hard-hitting opener, should offer Lambert support at the top of the innings.

This match precedes the Washington CC-Reid's Pen match at 9:30 a.m. Reid's Pen will be led by the talented youngster from Kensington Cricket Club, Dennis Bulli, who can contribute with bat and ball.

At the Portsmouth ground, at noon, Portsmouth take on Bridgeview. Colours International, who have been given a bye this week, feature former Jamaica opener Delroy Morgan.

The event will take on a bright and vibrant flavour as for the first time the cricketers will play in coloured clothing. The semi-final will be held on Sunday, September 19, and the final on Sunday, September 26.
