FATTY BUM BUM, running at odds of 3-1 with champion jockey Omar Walker riding for champion trainer Wayne DaCosta, made short work of rivals at Caymanas Park yesterday to win the sixth running of the $2.95 million Cash Pot 'Only One For Me' Trophy over 1200 metres.
This marked race No. I in the Supreme Ventures 2-Y-O Series of three, which offers total prize money of $11.8 million, including a million-dollar bonus to the owner of the horse good enough to win all three races in the series.
The second race in the series, the $3.6 million Pick-3 Super Challenge Trophy over 1400 metres will be run on November 27, with the final leg over 1600 metres on Boxing Day for a purse of $4.25 million.
This, the first race in the series, was billed as an intriguing clash between the bay filly FATTY BUM BUM and the Robert Pearson-trained colt TRADITIONAL PRINCE, installed an even-money favourite with Dick Cardenas aboard.
But when the starter let them go, TRADITIONAL PRINCE dissipated his chances by walking out of the gates from the outside post position, thus paving the way for FATTY BUM BUM who, after chasing BLENDER (27-1) at close range in the 13-strong field, went by, approaching the home turn to win most impressively.
She had 5 3/4 lengths to spare over SHINING GOLD (4-1), who raced in touch from the half mile to outfinish ISNT SHE SOMETHIN (7-1) by half a length for second.
Although missing the break and outpaced passing the half mile, TRADITIONAL PRINCE made a frantic move on the outside of the field to be close up in third approaching the home turn. But the effort took its toll on the Traditional offspring from early in the straight, and he weakened quickly into seventh place, 11 1/2 lengths away.
Three wins from four starts
FATTY BUM BUM has now won three races from four starts for total stakes of $2.74 million. She is by Storm Craft out of the Law Of The Sea mare Bird Stow, owned by the trainer's wife Elizabeth DaCosta and bred by Allan Flowers, who disclosed that her full sister will be offered in the annual yearling sale at Caymanas Park on November 14.
Jockey Walker said he was pretty confident that FATTY BUM BUM would win this lucrative race.
"My horse was working brilliantly in preparation for the race and I just sat and waited in second for the stretch run, and she simply exploded," said the three-time champion jockey.
Meanwhile, the classy American 4-y-o filly HONEYOFALADY (8-5) defied topweight of 58.5kg to win the grade-one None Such Sprint Trophy over 1200 metres by 1 1/4 lengths in post-to-post fashion. One of two winners on the card for top apprentice Doushane Gordon, HONEYOFALADY is owned by Combo and trained by Dwight Chen.
