UNITED NATIONS (CMC):

The United Nations yesterday made an appeal for 350 doctors and 2,000 nurses to reinforce the fight against cholera in Haiti. UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos made the appeal at the conclusion of a two-day working visit to Haiti. She said the additional doctors and nurses would join others already in Haiti. Meantime, Amos said that 30,000 more volunteers are needed for the information campaign to prevent the disease. The UN official underlined the need to create more medical centres and facilities for handling corpses and human waste, and demanded a rapid response to prevent the death of more people from cholera. The epidemic has infected more than 60,000 and has killed 1,415 since it appeared on October 21.
