Defensive driving
Defensive driving is intelligent driving and requires patience and consideration to other road users. It involves being constantly alert and ultimately saves lives. Without patience, a driver is headed for trouble no matter how carefully he/she may think he/she drives.
"Once the basics are learned, the way is clear for safer, more satisfying driving," said David Jones, an auto mechanic who operates in Cassia Park, St Andrew.
Intelligent driving also means obeying the traffic signals and ensuring the vehicle you are driving is in good working condition.
Are wiper blades in good condition in the event of rain? Are brakes in good working order? Is the oil at an adequate level? Is the battery fluid at the right level?
These are all questions an intelligent driver should ask.
An intelligent driver also ensures he/she:
- Is well rested before starting assigned driving tasks.
- Does not take any drug that could make him/her drowsy before taking the steering.
- Watches out for pedestrians.
- Plans a journey before embarking on it and understands time management.
Jim Kenzie, writing in the Toronto Star, once said: "All you need is some knowledge, some common sense, and some consideration for the other person. The road is not a place for showing off, for impatience or selfishness."
- Paul Messam
