The seventh annual tennis tournament between members of the Georgia Tennis and Country Club and the Kingston-based Racqueteers tennis team took place last Saturday, November 27 on Jamaica's only remaining grass courts at the Georgia Club in the tranquil hills above Duncans, Trelawny.

To celebrate the occasion and the 75th anniversary of the club, a special antique solid silver ex-JLTA 1938 cup was awarded to the winning Georgia team. The cup will be presented to the winning team each year but then returned for safe keeping.

Of the seven matches played, Georgia defeated Racqueteers on five occasions. Georgia have benefited from always playing at home and determining the rules.

Backed by rules

Club tennis captain Ray Schnoor congratulated the 13-member Racqueteers team.

"We only won," said Schnoor, "because of the rules we enforced against you."

Tony Gambrill, opposing captain, was heard muttering, "Next time, next time." All team members played three sets of competition tennis (Georgia won by only four games out of the 152 played) and this was followed by exhibition matches between the three best pairs on each team.

The Georgia team consisted of Ray Schnoor, Custos Hon Paul Muschett, Andrew Hopwood, David Muschett, Andrew Grant, Andrew Todd, Klaes Secher (specially down from Toronto for the match), Roy Collins, Tony Hart, Bruce Hart (many uncalled foot faults), Mira Todd (late entrant who played well), James Ransome and Johnathan Todd. Andrew Hopwood was prevented from playing due to academic commitments.

Team members

The Racquet-eers team consisted of Tony Gambrill (non-playing captain and coach), Rachel McLarty, Rosie McIver, Gill Drake, Norman Marshall, Howard Drake, Everton Morgan, Aubyn Hill, Richard Gomes, Stephen Todd, Rolly Grant, Richard Jones, and Oliver Clarke.

Refreshments were produced and shared out by the industrious Dimps Gallant, Sheona Muschett and Monica Ladd-Clarke. Collin Gallant, once again maintained the scores meticulously, fairly and with good humour.

Captain/coach Gambrill requested that captain Schnoor seek to improve the main road from Duncans to Georgia and also the club driveway, prior to future matches.
