Seeded at number one in all three events, Gareth Henry gave a solid all-round performance to take the 'Triple Crown' in Monday night's National Continental Foods Limited-sponsored Open finals of the Chinese Benevolent Association (CBA) Badminton Tournament.

He first defeated Garron Palmer in the singles 16-21, 21-17, 21-17, then teamed with Palmer in the doubles to brush aside the nation's top junior pair of Dennis Coke and Anthony McNee 21-14, 21-13. He returned to take the mixed doubles with sibling Geordine over Palmer and another top junior, Mikaylia Haldane, 12-21, 21-19, 21-16.

National senior champion, Alya Lewis, took the Open Ladies singles, controlling the match to defeat 2009 national junior champion, the 16-year-old Shana-Kay Bailey 21-18, 21-19. In the Open ladies doubles, top seeds Haldane and Heidi Kaye Williams defeated juniors Bailey & Sheinell Hyatt 21-16, 21-14.

In a very competitive C Division, which was sponsored by Premier Optical Limited, only one player was able to take more than one event. Top-seeded Samantha Henry won the ladies singles over number-three Diamond Cassanova 17-21, 21-19, 21-16, then teamed with Daisy Hue to take the ladies doubles over Shameka Pink and Iesha Gordon 21-14, 21-16.

Apart from the large 421 entries over the two weekends, the most notable thing about this CBA tournament was the number of juniors who stepped up their game to challenge the established senior players. This augurs well for Jamaica's prospects in next year's Pan American Junior Badminton Championships which will be staged here in Jamaica.

All matches were played at the CBA headquarters, 176 Old Hope Road.
