Karters battle in US

When the starter waves the green flag to send them on their way this morning, Jamaica's go karters Thomas Issa, Jonathan Law, Matthew Williams, Justin Sirgany and Collin Daley Jr are expected to battle their overseas rivals to the wire for the chequered flag.

Issa and Law will be racing in the Rotax Mini Max Class, while the Red Bull-sponsored athlete, Daley, along with Williams will compete in the Rotax Junior Class. The talented Sirgany will be in the Micro Max Class.

"The guys will be using this race meet to prepare themselves for the Florida Winter Tour (FWT) season which begins in February," said Neil Williams, one of the directors of the Jamaica Karting Association (JKA).

Speaking from their camp in Orlando on Friday, Williams said the Jamaican karters were in high spirit and ready for action. He also stressed that the weather will not impact the karters.

"The weather has been very good so far," said Williams.

The meet got under way yesterday and will climax today. Based on their current form, all the karters are likely to make the podium. Sirgany could upset the apple cart, something he did early this year in Florida.

In the meantime, Jamaica's bright prospect, Joshua Sirgany, has stunned his rivals in the United States (US), by amassing 1,144 points to now be ranked number two in the Micro Max Championship in the United States.

According to correspondents from one of the US race officials, Marshall Martin, Sirgany was first named as the US's number-one ranked Micro Max karter, beating the top-rated Anthony Ganji Jr and Sebastian Fernandez, but a later correspondent came, advising Sirgany's connection that after reviewing the Northeast Points, there was an error in the recording of races for August 28 and 29.

Ganji was adjudged the winner, beating Sirgany by six points.

"I am happy with his performance, but he will be back next year," said Ricky Sirgany, Joshua's father.
