Former champions August Town closed the gap on leaders Cavalier atop the standings in the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA)/Claro Super League competition, following their exciting 2-1 victory over Duhaney Park at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Bowl on Saturday.
The victory moved August Town to 23 points, five behind Cavalier (28), who were held to 1-1 draw by UWI at Collie Smith Drive.
Richard Hoo (23rd) and Omari Edwards (89th) scored both goals for August Town, who were demoted from top-flight football last season. Keith Chatman scored the consolation goal for Duhaney Park in the 93rd minute.
At Collie Smith Drive, home ground of Premier League team Boys' Town, Michily Waugh gave Cavalier the lead in the 11th minute. However, Andre Bernal pulled UWI level in the 90th.
Waugh gave Cavalier the lead when he tapped in a left-sided cross from Kirk Fletcher past goalkeeper Kristopher Lewis.
Five minutes later, Cavalier's Donovan Alvaranga came close to increasing his team's lead, but with Lewis at the his mercy, he shot wide of the target.
Second-period dominance
Cavalier dominated most of the second period, but they continued to be affected by faulty shooting from substitute Loxley Thompson, Waugh and Alvaranga, thus failing to increase their tally.
They were made to pay for missing scoring chances when Bernal netted the equaliser for UWI with the final kick of the game.
Joseph Campbell, Cavalier's assistant coach, was very disappointed with the result, blaming the draw on poor judgement by his defenders.
"I think that lack of concentration by my players cost us all three points in this game because I think that we dominated most of the game and also got numerous chances which we should have put away and we didn't," Campbell said.
"I also think that we didn't play the way we should have ... we gave up an easy goal right at the end of the game," he added.
Neville Bell, head coach at UWI, was somewhat pleased with his team's effort.
"I am happy that we got a point because for some reason we gave away the ball a million times, which is very unlike the University team," said Bell.
"We wanted to win this game and so I am very disappointed that we didn't get the three points," Bell added.
Santos (21) also closed the gap on Cavalier, moving up to fourth following their 2-1 come-from-behind win over Barbican (13).
Fabian Nethersole (90th) and Andrew Morris (94th) scored both goals for the Carlton 'Spanner' Dennis-coached Santos. Deno Schaffe netted for Barbican in the 40th minute.
Bottom-placed Real Mona (8) recorded a surprise 2-1 come-from-behind win over Rae Town (18) at Buttercup Park. Alfred Nelson 41st and Jhuvan Francis 77th netted the goals for Real Mona, while Damion Jackson scored for Rae Town in the 26th.
Rockfort (20) played to a 0-0 draw with Bull Bay (11), while the game between Mountain View United and Constant Spring, which was scheduled for Excelsior High School, was not played because the field was not prepared.
