  • Toll fees dip

Commuters plying the Portmore leg of Highway 2000 enjoyed a 25 per cent reduction in toll fees which started during May of last year. The six-month reprieve was as a result of rehabilitative work being done on the Portmore to Kingston stretch.

The discounted rates were: Class 1 - reduced to $90 from $120; Class 2 - $130 from $170; and Class 3 - $260 from $340.

The rates were applied between 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m to 9:30 a.m.

  • Bridging the gap

Some residents were temporarily cut off with the passage of Tropical Storm Nicole in late August.

The ford in Harbour View was demolished by the storm's heavy rains. However, daring residents braved neck-high waters to move back and forth.

The ford was reconstructed to facilitate movement.

  • JDIP dispersed

Jamaica felt the full force of Mother Nature's fury with the passage of Tropical Storm Nicole.

In its wake, 13 people lay dead and J$15 million in infrastructual damage was done to the island's road network. The Government, in its response, pressed ahead with its rehabilitation project under the Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme (JDIP).

"The JDIP will commence, as scheduled, with adjustments being made to reflect the new emergencies as we go along," Minister of Transport and Works Mike Henry, told Automotives.

"However, the immediate thrust is restoration and access," he said.

The Opposition People's National Party had earlier criticised the Government's proposed implementation of the JDIP fund, claiming it was to be executed along political partisan lines and demanded full disclosure of the process.
