Merrymaking with the mayor
Daviot Kelly, Staff Reporter
The promise was for little talking and plenty of music and being a man true to his word, Kingston Mayor Desmond McKenzie opened the dance floor at annual end-of-year party on December 30.
Looking spry as Jamaicans are accustomed to seeing him, the mayor kept up with tradition of hosting his shindig at Eden Gardens for those who have helped to enhance the work of the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation he has headed since 2003. He thanked all present for their support, citing that he and his staff couldn't do it without them. He acknowledged that 2010 was a testing year but said there were still some positives, including critical interventions from the private sector.
He joked that the colours chosen for the event (red, white and green) represented both major political parties with the white being the compromise in the middle. He also quipped that a 2 a.m. cut-off time was not in his diary and instructed the MC to "throw away the chairs" as it was dancing time. And guests wasted no time in getting down, the perfect prelude to the New Year's Eve parties the following night.
Guests out included Delroy Chuck, Lee Clarke, Errol Greene, Commander (ret) John McFarlane, Scarlette Gillings, Joan Gordon-Webley, Audrey Hinchcliffe and son Garth, Joyce Young, Rohan Powell, Andrea Whyte, Derrick Wilks, Kenneth Shaw, Dara Smith, Cecil Thoms and Dashan Hendricks.
