Sligoville residents take five
SLIGOVILLE, St Catherine:
TELECOMS firm Digicel teamed with Spanish Town Citizens Against Gun Violence to host a fun day in the St Catherine community of Sligoville last Saturday.
Hundreds of children from the community were treated to a children's fun zone with face-painting, dandy-shandy, hopscotch and jump rope with the 'kick for prizes' activity being a big hit. Adults also enjoyed dominoes, cricket, football and a host of other activities. Digicel Rising Star 2010 winner Dalton Harris provided entertainment.
Rosemarie Greene, founding head of the Spanish Town-based non governmental organisation (NGO), commended Digicel for its support. Greene formed the NGO, after her brother was killed by gun violence in order to stem the tide by presenting academic courses such as literacy, numeracy and computer training for youth.
"The Digicel Foundation came to my aid and provided computers and other equipment for my homework centre. When I heard about the Digicel's community day out, I invited them to Sligoville and without hesitation they said yes," Greene related.
Connecting with customers
Digicel has been making stops in various parishes since early 2010 with a series of community events focused at further connecting with its customers in communities across Jamaica.
"When we heard about the work that Mrs Greene has been doing, we knew immediately that we had to support her in this effort, said Donovan White, head of marketing at Digicel. "It's great to see the community members out in their numbers interacting with each other, and we commend Mrs. Greene for driving this initiative."
The Social Development Commission participated in the event and offered advice to the community members.
