NOTEWORTHY

Published:Wednesday | February 2, 2011 | 12:00 AM

Below are comments from readers of www.jamaica-gleaner.com on yesterday's Gleaner exposé of Everald Warmington's apparent ineligibility to sit in Parliament because he was a dual citizen when he was elected.

bunch of fraudsters

Jamaica needs a total overhaul of its parliamentary system. They all need to go; none of them can be trusted. Liars, manipulators and fraudsters, that's what they are.

you should be fired!

Well, Mr Warmington, for all your 'fire', you should be fired. Period. You are one person who gives no quarter to anyone and thus should be treated in the same manner.

eyeing greener pastures

Any person electing to secure foreign citizenship while sitting in Parliament must, of necessity, consider their Jamaican citizenship substandard and not equal to that being sought or attained, or to gain some benefit not afforded by not having citizenship in the particular foreign country.

However, the fact that all these people regain their seats and are set to regain them through by-elections strongly suggests that at this stage of nationhood, Jamaicans are well aware of the desire and, in some cases, need, to 'guh foreign'.

no integrity

Dual citizens have low incentives to ensure the development of this country as they can cop out at any time and access the goods and services they need in their more developed alternative home.

This is about integrity, patriotism and commitment, which are all attributes our politicians should possess.

no knowledge of laws

Maybe making learning the Jamaican Constitution a mandatory inclusion in the high-school syllabus could help to ease the problem. I don't think most of these politicians even know the laws of the land.

dishonest and disappointing

It is clear that these people have no allegiance to Jamaica whatsoever. They position themselves for a quick flight to a foreign land after they have wrecked the country they claim to love.

There is nothing "petty" or "stupid" about these revelations, as Mr Warmington would have us believe. His dishonesty and deceit have been exposed for all to see.
