Female polo stars in spotlight
The annual Ladies Tri-Nation International polo tournament gets under way this afternoon at the Kingston Polo Club, Caymanas Estates, with Jamaica opposing Zimbabwe in the first match starting at 2:30.
In addition to Jamaica and Zimbabwe, the United States, which contested the tournament last year, will bow in on Tuesday with their first match against Jamaica at the Kingston Polo Club starting at 4:30 p.m.
The tournament continues next Thursday with Zimbabwe up against the United States at Chukka Blue in Sandy Bay, Hanover, starting at 4:30 p.m., with the top two teams slated to contest the final on Saturday, February 12 at the St Ann Polo Club, Drax Hall.
The Jamaica team will be captained by the island's most celebrated female player, Lesley Ann Fong Yee, and includes Rachel Turner, Michelle Subaran and Susan Wates.
Zimbabwe: Sherri-Lyn Hensman (captain) Hilary Campbell, Leonora De Ferranti and Diana Jack.
The United States: Karen Reese (captain), Cecelia Cochran, Tiffany Bush and Lauren Biddle.
The United States, with Reese at the helm, were among the three participating teams last year when the tournament was won by England. However, the Jamaica Polo Association wanted to invite other teams like Zimbabwe and Argentina this year, with Zimbabwe getting the nod.
Prior to the match between Jamaica and Zimbabwe, the final of the club tournament will be played on a round-robin basis among Kingston Polo Club members, this commencing at 1:30 p.m.
