Dover drivers gear up

They went shopping. Now, several Jamaican top racers are in possession of some hot, new rides or revamping existing ones, making the vehicles some of the fastest machines in the Caribbean.
National and regional champion David Summerbell, Doug Gore and Chris Campbell have now set the stage for an intense and epic showdown this season at the Dover Raceway in St Ann, commencing April 25.
Motor racing fans have much to look forward to as Gore is set to showcase his spanking new Audi TT DM race car. Campbell, too, will be putting German technology to the test in his BMW. And, reports reaching Automotives are that Summerbell has done some serious modifications to his Mitsubishi Evolution 8.
Gore, a prolific racer for over 20 years, who traded in his Mitsubishi Evolution, expressed a lot of confidence in his new ride.
"This is the real deal and is about 400 pounds lighter than Summerbell's car. A German expert said it will outclass the best of the crop cars in the island," Gore said.
He further explained that motorsport lovers will see the art of breaking and handling, when he takes the track for the April 25 meet dubbed Carnival of Speed.
"It is amazing. Wait until we test it," said Gore, who believes Campbell, Summerbell and himself, should be a force to reckon with in this year's Caribbean Motor Racing Championship.
While Campbell is not saying much about his BMW, Gore believes his arch-rival has a fantastic car.
"My car will be ready in another three weeks and I am coming all out this season. How competitive I will be, I cannot say yet until the car is tested," Campbell told Automotives on Friday.
It is understood that two veterans, Peter Rae and Peter 'Bull' Thomp-son are in the process of getting their acts together too. Rae has effected some repairs to his RX7 'Zoom Zoom' Mazda.
Reports reaching Automotives are that the shopping and intense preparation have not fazed Summerbell.
"I was just joking with Summerbell, telling him how everybody was coming for him this season and all he said was 'let them come'," Hilary Jardine, president of the Jamaica Race Drivers' Club told Automotives.
He stressed that based on the drivers' preparation so far, next month's race meet is shaping up to be a battle royal.
Teddy Burton, in his Superior Parts-sponsored '98 Honda Civic EK, has done some repairs too, and is looking forward to turn the tables on Kyle Gregg, Alan Chen and Peter Jaggan.
