Harper re-elected

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC):

Roger Harper was returned as president of the Georgetown Cricket Association for another year.

The former Guyana captain and West Indies off-spinner won in a landslide 28-7 victory over former Young Guyana batsman Alfred Mentore at the GCA annual general meeting and elections on Monday.

Mentore, a former national Under-19 batsman in the early 1990s and ex-GCA president, was the only challenger for Harper, and seemed under-prepared during the lead-up to the voting by the city clubs.

After heated discussions in the preamble to an election, which could significantly impact on the outcome of the Guyana Cricket Board elections, presiding officer Ronald Williams ensured voting from the 35 delegates was held in a transparent manner.

Not only was Harper entrusted to run the cricket in the county of Demerara, but his executive were all elected unopposed, including former national wicketkeeper/batsman Neil Barry and regional umpire Colin Alfred.

Harper said he was a former cricketer taking a stance for the betterment of cricket in the country.

He observed that the general standard of discipline and commitment at the club level in the city had plummeted in the last two decades.
