Grange regrets attack on Windies team bus

Sports Minister Olivia Grange has described yesterday's stoning of the West Indies team bus in Dhaka, Bangladesh, as "very unfortunate".

The incident followed the regional team's emphatic nine-wicket win over the hosts, in their International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup, as Bangladesh were blasted out for the fourth-lowest total in World Cup history of 58 in 18.5 overs, in the Group B match at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium.

The West Indies replied with 59 for one, with Chris Gayle leading the way with an unbeaten 37.

"I am so relieved that none of our players or team officials werre injured," said Minister Grange, while condemning the incident.

"Although there have been problems at cricket on the subcontinent in recent times, today's incident was a very unpleasant surprise. No one expected the home fans to react in the way they did, although their team suffered such a heavy loss to the West Indies," continued Grange.

"The attack on the bus was not cricket. I have heard reports that the attack was really meant for the Bangladesh team. That would have been equally unacceptable. That is simply not the way to express displeasure at the performance of any team.

"As the minister for sports of Jamaica, I urge the International Cricket Council authorities and the host countries to do everything possible to ensure the safety of all teams and spectators at the tournament," Grange added.
