National reps star at McDonald Mem Golf

Jamaica's national representatives produced impressive performances during last weekend's Herman McDonald Memorial Golf tournament, held at the Constant Spring Golf Club.

On Saturday, Florida-based Sean Green shot an impressive one under par 69. The next day he battled the course, racking up one triple-bogey, six bogeys, ten pars, and one birdie for a final-round score of 78, which gave him the title of overall champion.

Mark Newnham shot 72, 75 to emerge first-place winner of the men's section over University of Technology student Kemar Brown. Philip Prendergast took third place.

Robert Chin held on to his first-round lead to finish first in the men's senior category (with scores of 72, 76) ahead of Jeffrey Dujon and George Hugh.

Philip Wilson beat Dennis Atkinson and Sherold Philibert with rounds of 74, 81, to secure his win in the men's super senior section.

Women's section win

Jodi Barrow secured her win with rounds of 74, 72 in the women's section. She was followed by fellow team member Michele Gabay.

Of the five winners in the junior category, Jordan Lowe is the only competitor who has not yet made his debut on the national side. Michael Wilmot, Sherisse Walker, Danielle Morris and Ricardo Perry, all national junior team members, were leaders in their age groups.

Nett winners in the overall tournament were: Gregory Mayne (men), Thomas Smith (senior men), Tony Wright (super senior men) and Michele Gabay (women).

On Sunday, the Lindy Delapenha Golf Challenge saw a total of 105 individuals competing in honour of the former national player for his contribution to the sport of golf. Phillip Wilson won that tournament with 41 points, followed by Fabian Campbell. Maurice Foster took third place.

At the prize-giving function, McDonald's widow expressed her delight that the event was a reality and that Delapenha, a good friend of her husband, would be the beneficiary of the tournament.

McDonald, who represented Jamaica at the first Hoerman Cup event in 1957, played in the Caribbean Championships up until shortly before his death last year.

The tournament was sponsored by CGM Gallagher and Pear Tree Press, in association with American Home Assurance. Other product sponsors included Absolut, Caribbean Passion, Chivas, Rex Goliath, Sandals & Yes Golf. Once the results from this final calendar event are applied to the order of merit, invitations will be extended for national trials. The trials are scheduled to take place next June 16-19.
