GC Foster, UTech hold early lead

G.C. Foster College and the University of Technology (UTech) are early leaders of the VMBS-sponsored Intercollegiate Track and Field Championships, following competition on yesterday's opening day of the two-day meet at the UWI Usain Bolt track.

After four finals, G.C Foster College lead the female section with 59 points, followed by UTech (39), University of the West Indies (UWI) 19, Mico University College (14), Excelsior Community College (EXED), on five, Montego Bay Community College (four) and College of Agriculture and Science (CASE), also on four points.

Defending champions UTech lead the male section with 39 points. G.C Foster (31) are next, followed by UWI (25), EXED (nine), Portmore Community College (four), Mico (two) and CASE (one).

The highlight of yesterday's opening day was a double win by UTech's Ramon Cooper. He picked up his first win in the men's triple jump final, clearing 14.78 metres to defeat UWI's Darrel Garwood (13.82m), as Oshane Foote (13.78m) of G.C. Foster College placed third.

Cooper returned to win the 400m hurdles final in 51.87 seconds ahead of G.C. Foster's Conroy Greaves (53.64) and EXED's Winston Edwards (55.44), respectively.

UTech took both 100 metres. In the women's category, former World Junior representative, Carrie Russell, sprinted to victory in 11.44 seconds, beating teammate Natasha Morrison, who clocked 11.86 seconds and G.C. Foster's Audra Segree (11.97).

Jacques Harvey topped the men's field in 10.37 seconds to get the better of Rasheed Dwyer of G.C. Foster College in 10.48 seconds and UTech's Romone Nichol who clocked 10.67.
